How to Prepare Your Dog for Their Stay Away from Home

Leaving your dog in someone else’s care for the first time can be emotional. Whether it’s for a weekend or a longer stay, it’s normal to feel nervous. The same goes for your dog, especially if they’ve never been away from home before.

At Cammino Canino, we’ve helped many dogs through their first time apart from their owners. With a few small steps, you can make the experience much smoother for both of you.

Pack Familiar Comforts

Bring items that smell like home. A blanket, a favorite toy, or even an old t-shirt of yours can help your dog feel more secure in a new space. Familiar scents reduce anxiety and give your dog something comforting to cuddle with during quiet moments.

Ease Into the Change

If possible, schedule a short trial session before the full stay. Even a few hours in the new environment gives your dog a chance to adjust. It also helps us learn more about their needs, preferences, and any little quirks they may have.

Stick to Routine (As Much As Possible)

Dogs thrive on consistency. Share your dog’s usual routine with us, including feeding times, walk schedules, sleep habits, and any important commands or cues. The more we know, the more we can make their stay feel familiar and safe.

Be Honest About Behavior

Whether your dog has separation anxiety, resource guarding, or a sensitive stomach, we want to know. Being transparent helps us tailor their experience and avoid unnecessary stress. No judgment, just support.

Stay Connected

We keep you updated with photos and videos so you can see how your pup is doing. Knowing they’re safe and happy makes the time apart a lot easier.

Keep Goodbyes Low-Key

When it’s time to drop off your dog, keep things calm and positive. Long emotional goodbyes can make your dog more anxious. A quick hug, a cheerful tone, and a confident goodbye go a long way.

Trust the Process

The first stay away is a big step, but it also opens the door to new experiences, socialization, and enrichment. Many dogs who were nervous at first return with wagging tails and look forward to their next visit.
